Enrique Metinides, an accident and crime scene photographer for La Prensa in Mexico City, has a new book out called 101 Tragedies of Enrique Metinides (Aperture). The collection features tragic, often poignant images of life and death in Mexico City, like the one pictured above, captioned:

Colonia Doctores, Niños heroes, Mexico City, 1966: “This woman did not have money to buy a coffin for her child, who had been killed when a bus ran over him. She went to a coffin shop near the hospital and started praying and begging, crying for help. After some time, she was surrounded by people, who asked what happened. Together, they each gave a little bit of money to help her out. With that and a discount from the coffin maker, she was able to buy a coffin and bury her child with some dignity. She had to walk nine kilometers with the coffin to her home”

Decided to buy this book to help me out with dissertation stuff and because I ADORE Metinides. I’ve had his other book out from the uni library for nearly a year now and I have the overwhelming desire to steal it because it’s not in print anymore and costs about £100. Although this one may satisfy my addiction enough to avoid hefty fines.

My mum is also incredibly lovely and chipped in for it because she think it’d help me and she knows I’m crazy stressed.

SO excited to get it on Thursday :D

I am a street photographer in New York City. Several months ago, I was approached by a representative of DKNY who asked to purchase 300 of my photos to hang in their store windows “around the world.” They offered me $15,000. A friend in the industry told me that $50 per photo was not nearly enough to receive from a company with hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue. So I asked for more money. They said “no.”

Today, a fan sent me a photo from a DKNY store in Bangkok. The window is full of my photos. These photos were used without my knowledge, and without compensation.

I don’t want any money. But please REBLOG this post if you think that DKNY should donate $100,000 on my behalf to the YMCA in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. That donation would sure help a lot of deserving kids go to summer camp. I’ll let you guys know if it happens.

Was doing a bit of research for my dissertation and came across an article on this photo. I’ve known it well since we were shown it in a presentation at school about 8 years ago and since then it’s come up a lot at uni, especially since I started a dissertation on death. But I had no idea the photographer, Nick Ut, had taken the girl to hospital after he’d taken it. That’s her in the middle and him on the right in the second photo, taken 40 years later.

Made my quite happy to learn this having read quite a lot about photojournalism photographers who shot similar subjects then left (Kevin Carter’s shot of the starving girl being a prime example). I understand why people do it but still makes you start to wonder if photographers can be a bit heartless sometimes…

“Starting at Kalapana, Hawaii I walked for two hours right to the place on the coast where active lava flows were touching the ocean.

I was overwhelmed about the scene: Hot air touched my face as I stood at the edge of the cliff, steam drifted away by the strong wind, thunders in my ears as the waves crushed on the melted stones and water fought with fire.

I stood and watched the lava flows started to glow as it became darker. I wanted to express what happened there. All four elements – water, fire, air and earth came together at that point to show how they’re playing the game. — Jennifer Vahlbruch

I went to the Isle of Arran a couple of weeks ago for a few days. I’ve been going there since I was a baby (and before I was even born! Haha) every couple of months or so and I hadn’t been in a while so it was lovely to revisit it! I hadn’t actually gone with all my photography gear before so I took a loooad of autumnal photos! I’m getting through them slowly so I’ll post them all up when they’re done!

In the nineteenth century, a morbid and curious custom has spread to various parts of the world: the photos were ”Post Mortem”.
”Post Mortem” comes from Latin, meaning after death.

The photos ”Post Mortem” apparently originated in England, when Queen Victoria asked to photograph the corpse of an acquaintance or a relative, so she can keep as a souvenir.
soon after, this idea spread around the world, keeping a morbid reminder of loved ones that have passed on.

Even today, as strange as it may seem, some places still have this custom.

The girl who is standing in the photo is the one who is dead.

This is a classic example of photographic art.

Notice the hands

for people wondering how the corpse is standing up, there is a posing stand supporting the body it’s very hard to see but the stand is supporting the neck, arms and back.

the girl in this picture has her eyes open, but in some cases the photographer will paint pupils on the eye lids to make it seem like they are wide awake

Welp I imagine this was in no way disturbing for the live girl sitting next to her.

I have a year of these kind of photos to look forward to thanks to my extremely morbid choice for a dissertation subject.

So for my latest uni project I’m doing a series of self-portraits based on Postsecrets and making them relate to myself.

This one is based off of this secret. I always do make wishes at 11:11. Even though I’m a skeptical person and I know nothing will come of it it’s just nice to think that way. A comfort blanket maybe. Anyway, when I’m making my 11:11 wishes I tend to make them for friends in trouble or in need of luck. I think if I believed in wishes coming true and all that I’d believe they were more likely to come true if it was a selfless wish.

So there are a few symbols for friendship in here. Some of them personal that nooobody will understand. One of them you can’t even see which is annoying.

My Insomnia

I’ve been looking through lots of my old stuff recently because of the (ahem, FAILED) London exhibition and realised I took most of it before I started this blog! So forgive me if I put up some old stuff.

I took this back when I was attempting a 365 (which I was RUBBISH at btw, only got to about 40 I think) when I decided a bit of lighthearted photography was needed! I had too many serious photos around that time.

I’ve not taken anything new in so long because I’ve been concentrating on uni and wedding work so I’m definitely going to try and get some stuff done this week! Got sooo many ideas built up!

Oh also, forgot to say that I’ve made the blog layout all shiny and different and it now has a domain name!

Recently The Gordon Parks Foundation discovered over 70 unpublished photographs by Parks at the bottom of an old storage box wrapped in paper and marked as “Segregation Series.” These never before series of images not only give us a glimpse into the everyday life of African Americans during the 50′s but are also in full color, something that is uncommon for photographs from that era.
